Dear Pastor and Church,
May - June
2008
We mentioned Na-bu-see in our last prayer letter. The
doctors had said there was nothing they could do so they sent her home
to die. She was bed ridden. Well, she is still around and walks to
church faithfully. We praise the Lord for His grace. Some of the villagers
are scared of her because they believe she has a ghoul/spirit that comes
out at night and sucks blood from chicken's heads. Also, Na-taw, another
elderly lady in the church, is believed to be a Pe-gra-su (spirit that
floats out at night - just
the head and intestines). These types of rumors make the children afraid
of Christians.
Last month we drove one of the teens from our village to the hospital
after Sunday morning services. He had drunk a cap of weed killer two
days before. He had been throwing up and had first told his parents he
had eaten some bad fruit. He passed away the next day without Christ. He
had stolen from the school and was afraid his parents were going to find
out. Teen suicide happens every year in our village but usually is drug
related.
Vacation Bible School '08' went very well. For two days in a row 118
kids got the opportunity to learn about Jesus and His good news. Our
theme was "I told you so!" It was about what God says happens.
The games were set up as boot camp with each team having an animal as
their insignia. We even had a time where they were given a piece of meat
to eat and asked to guess what it was. We had goat, rabbit, crocodile,
fish, squid, pork, and chicken. We had a great time as the kids enjoyed
the games and teaching. VBS has another benefit as it helps the kids
dismiss the rumors as they get to know us better.
