David
& Debby SMITH & Family October 9, 2002 Dear
Co-Laborers in Christ, We
have made the move to our new work in Gatineau (Ga tee no), Québec.
The Lord answered our prayers in a mighty way by
helping us overcome the obstacles of moving to Gatineau.
To us, this is a confirmation of the Lord’s hand
that I followed His direction in the decision to come to Gatineau.
As we are getting settled we are excited to see what God is
going to do next now that we are here starting this new
ministry that God has called us to do as missionaries.
The name of our new church is l’Église Biblique Baptiste de
l’Outaouais (Oo ta oo way) (The Bible Baptist Church of the Outaouais).
Taking
over the work of another missionary includes a mixture of challenges
and blessings. As I
mentioned in our last letter, after Bro. Lafleur was killed in a
car accident in October 2001 many of the people became discouraged without a
shepherd and quit attending. We
have 13 in attendance now. We are
trying to gather the flock back. I
have sent out letters to those who had stopped attending and Debby and
I have begun visiting them. We
had a good visit with a young lady named Sylvie who
is a business professional working for the Government.
She is now coming to the church regularly.
Sylvie is saved. However,
she brings some spiritual baggage with her.
We are going to work with her through Bible studies to help
her understand certain doctrinal issues where she has some misconceptions.
She has a strong desire to join the church and serve the Lord.
We praise the Lord for this blessing.
Pray for the church membership class
as well as our outreach / evangelism efforts.
Pray
for a Syrian family we visited: Mounir and Joumana and
their children Georges and Jessica.
We had a good visit where I was able to share my
personal testimony and the plan of salvation in detail. Mounir had many questions and they seemed open.
However, he still has some difficulties accepting the Bible’s teaching
that Jesus is the only way to heaven (John 14.6).
They are from Syria, an Islamic culture, but they are not Muslims.
They had been attending a Greek Orthodox Church.
They seem to be searching. Pray
that the Holy Spirit will convict their hearts with the truth through our witnessing
and the New Testament and literature that we left
with them. We will visit them
again. I
have been preaching foundational messages for salvation and for young
Christian growth. Debby is teaching
the preschool Sunday school class. She
has three boys from the Demers family, Alexandre, Jonathon
and Vincent and our son Joshua in her class.
Our daughters, Sarah and Rebekah, take turns
helping Debby with the class. They
are adjusting well to their new schools and are missionaries
there. *Pray
also for Sylvie, that we could help as the Lord guides her in
spiritual growth and understanding. We thank you
for your prayers and support so we can reach souls in Québec
with the gospel!
Yours for souls,
