David & Debby SMITH & Family

Reaching French-Speaking Québec with the Gospel

February 11, 2004

Dear Co-Laborers in Christ,

“I hope I am just the tip of the iceberg!” was Michel’s response when I told him how much I appreciated his faithfulness and love for the Word of God!  Michel is saved, but is still very young in his faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Savoir.  He is very analytical as he is a financial planner.  Michel always has lots of good questions.  Like most French-speaking Quebecers, he grew up with a Catholic background, and having practically no knowledge of what the Bible actually says.  The Catholic Church and priests here actively discourage people from reading the Bible, saying that only their priests can correctly interpret the Bible.

Michel and his friend Pierre-Charles, a dentist, began attending our mid-week services at the same time.  They each have a sincere hunger for God’s Word.  I have told them time and again that it is good that they are like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, “…in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

Michel also has a sincere heart for the Church and work here in Gatineau, (Ga tee no), Quebec.  He wants to see this evangelistic church planting effort succeed.  He has become increasingly faithful in attending our services over the past weeks and months.  Michel is growing spiritually and prays often to be bolder to share Christ with others.  He also has a sincere burden for the salvation of his wife, Lise, and his 6 year-old son Jude.  *Pray that God will use Michel in a mighty way in this ministry.

We had a successful Christmas dinner with all the trimmings at the church.  There were 21 people that attended and 3 first time visitors, Roger, Patrick and Isabelle.  We had good fellowship as well as games with prizes to help get to know each other better.  After dinner I gave a Chalk talk with an evangelistic gospel message about the birth of Christ and the Cross.  Many were impressed and stayed afterwards to ask questions.  I gave the Chalk drawing to Christiane and her twins Philippe-Antoine & Louis-Vincent.  They said they would put it up in their house and use it to share the gospel of Christ with visitors.

* Please pray for the following people who have attended or visited our church services recently.  Pray that the Lord would draw them to himself and that they would have a desire to attend services regularly in order to hear God’s Word and grow in faith in Christ: Stéphane & Monique & baby Samuel, Gerard, Daniel & Lise & family, Marcel-René & Joanne & baby, Lucielle, Jean-Pierre & Sylvie & daughter Marie-Pierre, Christiane & twins Philippe-Antoine & Louis-Vincent, Carole & daughter Caitlin, Claude, Roger, Patrick, Paul & Nicole & grand-daughter Isabelle, Sophie, Julian, Susan, & Denis.

* Pray about the exchange rate from U.S. to Can. Dollars that has dropped 20% since January 2003.

* Pray that the work will continue to grow and that the Lord will bless our efforts in sharing the gospel.

Debby & I thank you for your continued prayers & financial support in these days and months to come!
