July 2002
Feeling a bit like the astronauts of old
returning to earth via "splashdown", we are glad to report
that we have ended furlough and are back on our field of service.
* Jane finished her year of graduate studies
with flying colors and the best of grades, and looks forward to applying
her new and improved counseling skills to the work here. Within
days of our return the Lord has begun using her in some dire cases in
this much needed ministry.
* The church in Cayambe received us with a full
house, and we were delighted to see many new faces in the congregation,
some who came to know the Lord during the time missionaries Tommy and
Ennie Bowen took part in the work during our absence. We are
taking inventory of the ministry, and are anxious to see the national
leadership strengthened and multiplied. To that end our youth
ministry is being revived, and we are encouraged by the growth of a cell
group in a distant neighborhood known as "Yaznan". Just
this week, two persons accepted Christ in our Sunday services, and
another young man was saved in the Monday evening meeting in Yaznan.
* A new church is being planted by one of
the missionaries sent out by the Bible Baptist Church of Cayambe. Following
a long season of prayer for such an opportunity, Oscar Cumbajin is
thrilled that the Lord has opened doors and hearts in starting a work in
Otavalo, a large Indian community to the north of us. In the few
initial weeks of meetings in an area known as San Roque, as many as
eighty persons have attended Bible Study there. Please pray for
guidance and support for this young man and his family as we work with
them to affirm this fledgling church.
* We had barely been home two weeks when our son
Benjamin and I suffered a major accident in what was once our beautiful
Suburban. Returning home from Quito one afternoon, without warning
the steering assembly collapsed, busting a wheel loose and sending us
careening into the side of a mountain. Seat belts and our guardian
angels did their job, stopping us just short of an abyss. We are
okay, but our transportation "is a big mess", as Benjamin put
it; it will take several weeks and several thousand dollars to get the
thing road worthy again. Please pray with us for the provision of
what our insurance will not cover, plus the other substantial expenses
we have incurred during our transition from furlough.
* Finally, please note our new contact
information. Our new email addresses are: Ben, <bmock@andinanet.net>
and Jane, <janieb@andinanet.net>.
Our home phone (direct dial from the U.S.) is 593-2-236-0517.
Please be sure and let us know if and when your e-address might
change. As always, we thank the Lord for you, your support and
your supplications for us.

Establishing Churches in Ecuador
January
2002
It seems a
bit awkward to write a prayer letter while on furlough, since we cannot
report directly from our work in Ecuador, but here are some of the
highlights of our lives and labors over the past few months:
Scattered among my travels to visit our supporting churches in Georgia,
Florida, Michigan, and Texas, I have sought the opportunity to speak to
a number of youth groups in an attempt to challenge teens for missionary
service. In Christian school chapels, youth rallies, and even a
couple of sessions in public schools, I have shared our experiences from
the field in a way which accentuates the pressing need for more
laborers. The response of young people to the challenge has been
enthusiastic, though it is troubling to find that a number of churches
simply do not expose their youth to missions on a regular basis. Please
pray that I will be an encouragement in my upcoming meetings.
Jane continues to make progress in her graduate studies, working hard to
maintain her 4.0 grade point average in courses such as ³Life Span
Human Development² and ³Theories and Strategies in Counseling and
Psychotherapy². She is definitely earning this degree, and looks
forward to applying her newly acquired skills and knowledge in our
service in Ecuador.
Over the years, Jane and I have neglected some health conditions which
have annoyed us following injury and illness on the mission field.
Taking advantage of the superior health care available in the
U.S., we are now receiving treatment for these ills, and would ask your
supplication for the success of this care. Also, please pray for
us as we struggle through the red tape of medical insurance, and the
financial burden of high deductibles and the cost of services for which
we have no insurance.
Though they miss their home and friends in Cayambe, the children are
enjoying their time stateside, especially spending holidays and
celebrating birthdays with extended family. Benjamin and Emily are
doing well in school, and Walleen is thrilled with her baby sitter
(Grandma) when Dad is on the road and Mom is in class. While they
are used to seeing the snowcapped peaks of Ecuador year round, the
winter snows of Michigan fascinate the kids. As I write we are
trapped, at home, fortunately, in a blizzard, which isnıt exactly
fascinating for Dad, who has to go and shovel snow now.

Establishing Churches in Ecuador
Our home and ministry continue to enjoy Godıs abundant blessings.
Here are some of the highlights we have experienced of late:
* After nearly a year and a half of waiting, the
Ecuadorian powers that be granted us the privilege of adopting a
precious little girl, Walleen Rachel, a 16 month old treasure who has
adorned our family and multiplied for us the joy of parenthood. Emily,
now six, and Benjamin, four, are delighted with their little sister.
After weeks of untangling the red tape associated with such things
here in the Third World, we thank the Lord that Walleenıs papers are
complete and in order; sheıs ourıs.
* I was invited to be the main speaker at a Youth Camp
organized by several churches from the coastal region, and was thrilled
to see that out of some 120 campers, 23 teenagers made a commitment of
faith in Christ. As I counseled with many throughout the week, I
was encouraged to deal with several young men and women who feel that
God is leading them on a path towards full time service. Our own
youth group in Cayambe is growing steadily, and we are praying that the
Lord will soon call out workers from among these enthusiastic young
believers.
* A national retreat for Independent Baptist pastors
and missionaries, put together by fellow missionaries Jim Smith and Joe
Wells, was a resounding success, as nearly fifty full time laborers
gathered for fellowship, encouragement and edification. For three
days missionary statesman Dr. Carl Boonstra challenged us with powerful
preaching concerning ³The Man of God and His Ministry². Following
the camp I was asked to participate in an ordination council for three
new pastors sent out by the ³King of Life² Bible Baptist Church of
Santo Domingo. On Sunday, June 3, I had the honor of translating
for Dr. Boonstra as he preached a tremendous ordination message; that
evening we spoke to a packed house back in our own work, the Bible
Baptist Church of Cayambe.
* Taking a major step of faith, Oscar Cumbajín, a
past graduate of our Bible Institute, is in the process of entering the
ministry full time, as he labors to win souls and build up the work of
the Bible Baptist Temple of Chaltura, a mission we have maintained for a
number of years in a northern province. Please pray for this young
man and his family as they seek Godıs guidance and provision in this
noble undertaking; soon we hope to be scheduling the ordenation of Bro.
Cumbajín to the Gospel ministry.
In spite of the good things we see happening, we are still overwhelmed
by the great spiritual needs of this land. There are so many
communities about us without Bible believing churches, and the masses
here are still largely unreached. Please pray with us that God
will stir complacent Christians to service, and open even greater doors
of opportunity to share Christ with the lost and disciple believers in
His ways. Thank you all for standing with us as we labor.
In His Care,
Ben & Jane
