March & April, 2007
Dear Pastors and Friends:
What an exciting and challenging few months we have had. Last
December we had a tsunami warning. In January we had another tsunami warning. In
February on the Island of Anatahan, 70 miles North of us, a volcano erupted and
sent a thick haze of sulfuric acid to cover our Island. This made everyone sick.
I think the whole Island was sick. It was over our Island for 6 days. At first
we thought we were all coming down with an epidemic of flu. The government told
us about the volcano and warned everyone to stay indoors. Finally, after 6 days
the wind changed course and we could breathe again.
In March we had minor earthquakes, the volcano sent off its
deadly haze again for 3 days and a large earthquake in the Solomons sent us to
higher ground again with another tsunami warning. With all the tsunami warnings,
the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, I feel like David in the Old Testament
when he said I would rather be in the hands of God than in the hands of men.
On Saturday we had a wedding for Edwin and Yumi. They are
from
the Island of Ponape. They have been living together for two years and have a
baby three months old. On Sunday I baptized them along with a Palauan man. The
reason Edwin and Yumi did not marry before this was because he first had to find
work and because the wage scale is so low it took them almost a year to save
enough money to buy an inexpensive wedding ring. He told me the other day that
he wanted to help me now, with all the Lord's work in the church.
We have also had a family of nine join the church from the
Philippines. They have come here for employment. I hope they will be able to
stay. Our newspaper tells us daily how bad the employment situation is. The
government is bankrupt, the airlines are pulling out and everywhere I look I see a
for rent sign where there use to be a business.
During Easter the people had an adult figure of an idol of
Jesus in a reclining position. Hundreds of people lined up to bow down and kiss
this idol and then drop money into a box for a blessing. We live on an Island
given over to Idolatry. Please pray that many will come to know the risen
Saviour before it is eternally too late. Pray that we will be able to win many
souls to the Lord and they will forsake their idols of stone.
In
Him,
David & Dottie McClure
