Dear Pastor, Church and Praying Friends,

We are looking forward to a new semester in the Mayo Indian Bible Baptist Institute this September.  With the help of Mrs. Wimm we have been getting materials organized for the fall semester.  We are preparing for new students as well as returning students.  Please pray for this semester that God would use these students to grow in knowledge and grace.

The summer has really boosted our attendance in Cruz Pinta and in Las Higueras.  On Sundays we are taking six institute students to the missions where they can develop the gifts God has given them.  Some teach the children, some teach adults and others play the guitar. They are a blessing and encouragement to the people in the missions, as well as to us.  We have seen several people won to Christ from the efforts of these institute students.

We had a youth meeting in Las Higueras this past Saturday.  We had a great attendance of seventy-five and a great time of fellowship and fun. One of our institute students brought a wonderful message about the "Lamb of God".  There were many young people there who were not saved but heard the gospel preached.  Pray that God will use His word to bring them to Himself.

We are still lacking the roof on the building in las Higueras.  With a thousand dollars we would be able to buy the metal beams for the rafters and tin for the roof.  Please pray for this need.

We have been helping restart a mission in a village called Jahuara.  We are holding services in the home of a baptized believer who lives there. We have seen great interest from the believers who are there as well as from new believers.  This past week we had an attendance of about thirty people.  Before the service we saw one lady come to know Christ as Savior.  Please pray for this mission.

In San Miguel summer did not help our attendance.  Many of our people left for vacation or went to visit their families who live in other areas.  However, school has now started and things are getting back to normal.  This past week we had a new family who just moved into the area to come and visit our services.

Anna and Matthew are doing well.  Matthew is still getting into everything.  He is now starting to talk and loves to say,  "I want to play".  Anna has started kindergarten and she loves it.  We turned part of the living room in to a classroom and bought her a little school desk.  The first few days of class she was so excited to be going to school she could not sit still.

Thank you so much for your continued support and prayers.  God bless you!

In Christ,

Dear Pastor, Church and Praying Friends,

Services are going well in Cruz Pinta and Las Higueras.  In Cruz Pinta we continue to have a core group of believers who are faithful to the services on Sundays and Tuesdays.  In Las Higueras we also continue to have a good group of believers who are faithful to the services, as well as visitors who consistently visit the services. Just over a month ago was privileged to dedicate a baby and family to the Lord.

In Las Higueras we are in the process of building a small church building to hold services in.  It began as a shelter and has ended up being a small building with a tin roof.  The men and I have been working hard to try to finish up before the summer gets here.  Please make this a matter of prayer.

In San Miguel we continue to meet in the home of a former neighbor.  We have services on Wednesday nights with a Bible study for the adults and a Bible lesson for the children.  It has been a real blessing for us to see how the Lord is working in the lives of new believers.  One of the believers brought her 16-year-old daughter to the services a few weeks ago.  After the service I was able to lead her daughter to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We finished up the first semester of Bible Institute on May 16th.  We had a good semester of studies with good spirited students.  We scheduled two outings of visitation after classes for this semester.  During these times of visitation we have seen many accept Christ at their Savior. Among these, several are being discipled by the institute students and the local churches.

We have now begun a new semester of classes in the Bible Institute.  We started with about 40 students.  We have added several new courses as well as those that continued from last semester.  Carolyn will continue teaching a class on the Christian family to the ladies and I will continue to teach a class on religions and cults, as well as how to organize and manage a Baptist church.  Please continue to pray for the teachers and the students of the Mayo Indian Bible Baptist Institute.

The first week of April we conducted a three-day youth camp.  It was the first camp we have held for our people.  It was well attended by young people from ages 12 and up.  We had right at forty campers which were all already believers.  There were chapel services everyday where they were challenged from the Word of God, as well as games and food.  On Friday morning we woke up early and had a race between teams climbing the small mountain in front of us to retrieve their flag and bring it down as a team.  Also we played tug of war across a narrow part of the river and other fun and exciting games.  We ended on Saturday afternoon with a service and fellowship of all the churches and missions.  There were three adult believers baptized form the churches.

We want to thank you for all you do to help us in the ministry among the Mayo Indians.  May God Bless You!

December 2001

Dear Pastor, Church and Praying Friends,

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.   Ps. 100:4-5

We praise the Lord for the truth of salvation that has endured to our generation and that continues to endure to others.  Since our last letter we are excited to have seen seven people saved in Las Higueras, two people in Cruz Pinta and one in San Miguel.  Services continue to go well in all three villages.

At the beginning of December we started a new semester of Institute classes.  We have about 40 students who are enrolled in the Institute and we are expecting a few more.  Please pray that the Lord would touch the hearts of others to enter the Institute.

The last day of classes before the Christmas break we decorated the classroom where we serve lunch and enjoyed a noon meal of Mexican beef stew, macaroni salad, tortillas and home made chocolate cake.  It was a good time of fellowship and fun in between classes.

This semester I am teaching a cults class.  The first part is over the basic beliefs of Christianity.  From that we will go deeper into what we believe as Baptist and compared it with what Catholics and Protestants believe.  Further in the course we will study the falsity of Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons and other cults.  Carolyn has also started teaching this semester.  She is teaching a course over the Christian Family to the ladies.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, the Lord provided a way for us to visit our family in Georgia.  While there, our children had routine checkups and immunization shots.  Anna also went to see an E.N.T to have tubes taken out of her ears.  The doctor was able to remove the tubes in his office; however, he recommended having her tonsils out as soon as possible.  Anna has a history of sleeping problems (sleep apnea) and sickness.  The surgery went great and we were able to go home from the hospital the next evening.  Since then she has been eating much better and sleeping very quite.  We praise the Lord for His goodness towards Anna.

Matthew continues to get into everything.  From climbing on the desk and kitchen table, to playing in the mud, he is a real mess.  He is now trying to communicate with us by mumbling and pointing.  It is a real blessing to watch him grow and learn new things everyday.

We thank you for your faithfulness to support and pray for our family and ministry.  Also, thank you for your cards and gifts during the holiday season.  God bless you.

August 2001

Dear Pastor, Church, and Praying Friends,

Last month we had the privilege once again of taking a trip to the ocean to baptize.  I baptized one teenage girl from Cruz Pinta and a ten-year-old boy and two adults from Las Higueras.  We praise the Lord for what He is doing in these villages.

We had our first Vacation Bible Schools in the villages of Cruz Pinta and Las Higueras.  With rains the entire week before we almost postponed our V.B.S. because we meet outside.  We had planned on passing out invitations the Saturday before and with rain that day we were not able to.  However, Monday we left early and went to pass out the invitations.  That evening the Lord held off the rain and we were able to continue with services as planned.   Although it rained twice that week, it did not interfere with our class times.  The V.B.S. was well attended by children, teenagers and adults in both villages.  We finished the week in Cruz Pinta with a high attendance of 119 with 34 accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.  In Higueras we finished the week with a high attendance of 140 with 39 being saved.

We have now started services in San Miguel.  We had our first service four weeks ago with 6 adults and 9 children.  The week before we went visiting in order to promote the service.  That day there was one lady and a couple who made decisions to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. Our second service we maintained a good attendance and that day the Lord allowed us to share the plan of salvation with another couple, who also accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

These past two months have been very fruitful months and we need your prayers for these who have made decisions.  Our work is not only winning them, but also training them in the things of our Lord.  Please remember us in you prayers as well.  Thank you so much.

Anna is now learning how to write her alphabet as well as learning different shapes.  She seems to be learning and advancing very well.  She enjoyed the vacation Bible school; she tells me that her favorite part was when they got to color.  Matthew has now learned to walk and he hashad a few falls.   Of course that has not stopped him from getting into everything.  We thank the Lord that they are both doing well.

Dear Pastor, Church and Praying Friends,

Services in Cruz Pinta and Las Higueras continue to go well.  We have been maintaining a good attendance in both, as well as a good spirit.  In both villages we are teaching basic truths from the Word of God and trying to apply these truths to their lives.  Recently we have been studying how to share the Gospel with others.  Many are not able to read or can not see well enough to read; so we have been teaching them how to share the Gospel with the wordless book.  Our people are very shy and need encouragement to share their faith.  Please pray for the people in Cruz Pinta and Las Higueras.

Since our last prayer letter, twelve people have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior and two have been baptized.  An elderly man in Cruz Pinta accepted Christ as well as a woman in Las Higueras and a Seri Indian in San Carlos.  In San Miguel nine people have accepted Christ as their Savior.  We praise the Lord for these who have made a decision for Christ.

In San Miguel we conducted a week long Bible Study at our house for children and young people.  Carolyn taught the Wordless Book.  We began the week with only 10 kids; however, by the end of the week we had over 20 in attendance, with 36 different children and young people during the week.  We finished the week with five children and two teenagers accepting the Lord as their Savior!

Carolyn had been praying for an opportunity to share the Gospel with our neighbor, Susanna.  One day while visiting with her, she asked Carolyn exactly why we were here.  Carolyn was able to share the plan of salvation with her and just as Susanna was about to bow her head in prayer a neighbor came to visit.  The next day they were suppose to get back together to finish discussing the Gospel but, Susanna was not at home for two days.  By then we thought that the opportunity had been lost. Three days later, She was at home and Carolyn was able to win her to the Lord.  Also, Susanna’s daughter accepted Christ.

We are in the process of trying to begin a work in the Village of San Miguel.  Please pray for this village and the nine that have made a decision, that they will grow in Christ and help the work grow in their village.

Anna and Matthew both had birthdays this month.  Anna turned four years old and Matthew turned one.  Both had a good time of cake and ice cream and presents and cards from family and friends.  Anna is learning many things as Carolyn is trying to schedule a time for pre-school learning each day. Matthew is now able to stand up by himself but has not begun to walk yet but he is still able to get into everything.  Thank you for your prayers for Anna and Matthew.

In Christ,

The Martins

Dear Pastor, Church and Praying Friends,

Since our last prayer letter there have been two precious souls saved in the village of Cruz Pinta. The first was a young girl who visited the services one Sunday and during the Sunday school hour accepted Jesus as her Savior. The second was a man seeking an answer to his problems and I was able to give him the answer in Jesus Christ.

Just over a month ago we began holding services in the village of Las Higueras on Sunday nights. Our first service we had four people who came out from the village to hear the Word of God. That night we were faced with a party and a wedding which were going on at the same time we were trying to hold services. Two weeks ago we were faced with a fair and a dance as well. However, we have had an attendance as high as twenty-seven.

In the village of Las Higueras we have purchased a piece of land. The lot is about 30'x 50' which will serve well for us at this time. We have already constructed the electricity pole and as the Lord provides we will begin building the shelter. Our lot is located next to an empty corner lot and we are praying that the Lord will allow us to purchase this corner lot as well. Please continue to pray with us concerning the village of Las Higueras.

My Institute class is going well. I have thirty-two students in my class and I enjoy teaching them the Word of God. It is amazing to see the dedication and desire of these students to serve the Lord. The Institute is a great way to train and encourage national workers for the ministry . Please pray that the Lord will continue to touch the hearts of the Mayo Indians to study the Word of God.

Anna has been struggling with allergies lately and at times has hindered her breathing and sleeping.  The doctor gave her allergy medicine and at this time she is doing much better.  Matthew now has six teeth and is crawling and pulling up.  Two weeks ago he had been running a temperature and we thought it was his teeth again.  However, it turned out to be an ear infection and his eardrum ruptured.  He has completed his medication and is feeling much better now.  This was his second ear infection.  Please continue to pray for Anna and Matthew.

Byrom, Carolyn, Anna and Matthew
