UPDATE FROM DEBBIE, missionary to Honduras

May 2008

When God is in the “driver’s seat” it’s always an incredible journey! He has our “trip” planned out precisely to get us to our destination. He knows exactly where each bend in the road will lead and exactly what we will find along the way. If we will trust His planning and go where He leads us it will be a journey full of unexpected beauty, surprises & blessings.  To be sure, there may be complications along the way, but, with Christ in the driver’s seat, we need never fear. It’s only really scary when we decide WE know a better route or a short cut and take the wheel into our own hands.

This part of our journey has lasted longer than we had first anticipated. In fact, our 5 month furlough has now turned into 10 months. There have also been a few unexpected “bumps” in the road, but, we have no doubt that the Driver knows exactly what He’s doing and where He’s taking us!

Mike has now completed 2 weeks of cancer treatment at the St. Joseph’s Medical Center of Del Rio, TX.  They pick us up at our hotel at 7:30 every morning, Monday through Friday, and take us across the border to Acuna, Mexico, to the clinic.  When we arrive, he gets an I.V., some oral medicines and 2 hyperthermia treatments (one microwave treatment and the other is a radio frequency treatment).  It is not painful and the only side effect is that some days, depending on what’s in that day’s I.V., he feels tired.  Last week, he got the first injection in his prostate.  They said he would get six more within the next two weeks and then, possibly, he would be done.  Please pray to that end!!

We have met so many sweet people at the clinic.  Many are Christians, and their ordeal with cancer and other serious illnesses has only served to draw them closer to the Lord.  Some, before coming to the clinic, had already gone through all the conventional treatments (surgery, chemo, radiation, etc.) and eventually were told by their doctors that they could do nothing more for them and to go home and prepare for death. One man, Roy, arrived in a wheelchair and had been given only a few days to live.  Now, two months later, Roy walks into the clinic for his treatments.  Although he still has a long way to go, he, as well as the others, is gradually getting better.   Both the Christians and non-Christians talk about God’s leading to take this course of treatment.  No one leaves the van to begin treatments without Mike, or one of the other patients, leading in prayer. Every day is another day to sing God’s praises for one more day of life and another opportunity to witness for Him.  Our lives have been enriched by knowing these people and we thank Him for the precious new lifelong friends we have made here.

We have been attending a wonderful little independent Baptist church here in Del Rio.  In fact, it’s the only independent Baptist church in town.  Victory Baptist Church has about 35 – 40 people.  They are a sweet group of prayer warriors that have been without a pastor for about 5 months, and yet they continue to faithfully support their church, their missionaries and carry on their prison ministry.  Their interim pastor, Bro. Perry Price, is a good, godly man.  He’s asked Mike to preach on Sunday and Wednesday nights while we are here. Of course Mike loves preaching anytime!  He was also asked to preach in Spanish at the prison last Friday night and 3 men accepted the Lord as their Savior!  This Friday, he will be speaking at a seminary in Mexico.  We have also been able to visit a church in Mexico with missionary Marshall Craig and his wife, Anne. We are so thrilled that God has given us so many opportunities to serve Him while we are here.

We continue to hear from our dear, sweet people in Honduras. Hardly a day goes by without us receiving at least one phone call from someone.  Although some of the works are struggling, they are still standing strong.  We are so proud of those who have carried the load for so long.  We are very homesick and can’t wait to get home and see everyone and get back to work.

Another “bump” in the road recently has been my dad’s health.  The day before we left to come to Del Rio for Mike’s treatment we found out that Dad has a very aggressive prostate cancer and also a malignant golf-ball sized tumor in one of his kidneys. Dad is overweight, has a pace-maker, and is on oxygen, as well as a few other health issues.  These things, as well as the fact that he’s nearly 81 years old, make surgery very risky.  I would be so thankful if you could also add him and my mom to your prayer list.

Thanks to Tommy Thompson, we now have a web site.  Tommy and his wife, Lynda, have been lifelong friends.  We appreciate so much all the hard work he has (and is) putting into getting our web site up and going.  Even though it’s still a work in progress, you can check us out at: www.RegionsBeyondBaptistMinistries.org (www.RBBMin.org).

We have received many encouraging phone calls, emails, and cards from so many of you.  Your outpouring of love, as well as your continued prayers, has meant more to us than you will ever know.  With Christ in the “driver’s seat” and you all praying and cheering us on, we can honestly say that it’s been a wonderful journey!  We love and appreciate you all so very much!

For the King until the trump,

Debbie Lane
