JULY 2008

Dear Prayer Partner,

June has been a most difficult month for us, and we are so grateful that our God is “…our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).  We began the month with the discovery that Daisey’s 94-year-old father, who has lived in our home since October of 2000,  has Stage IV SCLC (small cell lung cancer), and has been given one to three months to live.  He only recently returned from Florida where he had renewed his Driver’s License.  Daisey and her sister, after a lot of emotional struggles and prayer, have reluctantly decided to place him in a home.  The Hospice Care people will be called in shortly.  Please pray that God will be tender to Pap.  He knows the Lord and is ready to go home.
Ironically, Bro. Steve Thornton, who began the new work in Keller, Texas has a somewhat similar situation.  His parents live in Denver, Colorado, and we have offered to fill in for him as he travels to Colorado to resolve this family crisis.  Steve and Mary will leave somewhere around the middle of July, and we will temporarily fill in for him until he can return.  Please pray for Bro. & Mrs. Thornton as they travel to Colorado.  We met with his people this past Sunday (June 29th), and they are excited that the work will not miss a beat.  We, too, are excited as we will have the help of a lovely young couple, Clint (Clint pictured above with Bro. Thornton) and Christy Maxwell.  They are presently doing some online studies at Arlington Baptist College.

One of my favorite verses is found in Nahum 1:7, “
The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”  I don’t know if Hezekiah, Isaiah, or some unknown poet laureate of Judah wrote Psalm 46:1, but we do know that it has been trusted and tried and found to be true.  Since our son Dan’s accident in Brazil in 1977 we have instinctively turned to Psalm 46 whenever difficult circumstances arise.  This Psalm assures us that God can handle, in His will, in His own good time and way, every situation that occurs in our lives.

Thank you for your prayers and support for Home Missions.

                                                                   Unworthily His,
